First Responders Train CPR at Local Schools
Restart a heart day - children & staff taught life saving skills
Tuesday 16th October 2018 was a very busy day for Melanie, Martyn, Michael & Pete from the Five Villages First Responder (FVFR) team - they trained 80 year 6 children from Haxey Primary, Misterton Primary and Nursery School, Walkeringham Primary School and Beckingham Primary School in how to perform a range of life saving skills - from calling 999 to recognising a casualty who is unconscious, to performing CPR (cardio-pulmonary resuscitation), including using an automated defibrillator.
They then finished the day with a session for 22 staff at Misterton including teachers, teaching assistants, office, dinner time and care taking teams, on CPR and using a defibrillator.
The day was part "Restart a Heart Day", where people all across the UK and Europe are trained in these vital life saving skills. Many Community Responder groups across the region took part in this event at local schools in partnership with the British Heart Foundation and East Midlands Ambulance Service.
FVFR coordinator Martyn Johnson said: "The children were so receptive and enthusiastic to learning these skills and they all really got stuck in and proved that even children can give vital help in an emergency situation. Hopefully they will remember these important skills and may one day help to save someone's life."
