Training, Skills & Equipment

All members of the Five Villages First Responder team undergo training and regular assessments by Community Resuscitation Trainers and Paramedics from East Midlands Ambulance Service NHS Trust in the skills and equipment listed below. The training and assessments are carried out to a national standard, and all Community First Responders are required to requalify on a regular basis to ensure skills, knowledge and care are always to the highest standard. 
CFR's are trained in the following skills:
- CPR (Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation)
- Use of Automated External Defibrillator (AED)
- Bag-Mask-Valve Resuscitation & Airway Management
- Oxygen Therapy
- Patient Assessment
- Management of Breathing Problems; Cardiac Arrests; Choking; Chest Pains; Control of Bleeding; Diabetic Emergencies; Seizures; Severe Allergic Reactions; Strokes; Unconscious Patients.
- Infection Control & Prevention


Experienced CFR's can undertake further training to allow them to attend calls involving minor trauma, falls, burns and to emergencies involving children under 12 years of age. 
Equipment carried includes:
- AED (Automated External Defibrillator)
- Oxygen cylinder and masks
- Bag-Valve-Mask resuscitator (for providing rescue breaths)
- Suction unit (for clearing airways)
- Oropharyngeal airways (to help keep an airway open)

- Pulse oximeter (for measuring blood oxygen levels)
- Tuff cut shears
- First aid pack and dressings
- Torch
- Map books
- Patient report forms
- Aide memoire
- Mobile phone (for contacting the control room)

CFR's with the relevant additional training also carry:
- Paediatric sized oxygen masks and bag and masks
- Blood Glucose testing kit
- Blood pressure monitor
- Tympanic thermometer
- Nebuliser kits and salbutamol
